Theme

Let's use remanufactured single-use medical devices that are environmentally friendly and safe.

Abstract

The increase in medical waste is having a negative impact on the global environment. In Japan, many disposable products are used, and disposable chopsticks and paper cups are used for meals. Similarly, medical materials that are still usable are discarded, the earth is overflowing with garbage, and CO2 is increasing due to incineration. However, some single-use medical materials can be washed, assembled, sterilized, and reused. These are manufactured by medical device manufacturers and distributors as remanufactured medical devices (R-SUDs) that maintain high quality and cleanliness and are safe, and are also cheaper than new products. We would like participants of the Medical Safety Society to understand the benefits of R-SUDs, which are already on the market in Japan.

What happened on the day

The venue, which had a capacity of 70 people, was almost full and the event was a great success. After an introduction by Dr. Uetsuka, chairperson of Hasegawa, the lecture began, and ended on time with a discussion between the speaker and chairperson Aoki, who hit on the key points. Surveys were collected from 45 people, of which 35 were medical professionals, allowing us to hear the opinions of those in the medical field regarding remanufactured single-use medical devices. Satisfaction with the seminar was rated very highly. There was an overwhelming majority in favor of using R-SUDs, but at the same time, more than half of the participants had heard about R-SUDs for the first time, highlighting the fact that the topic is still not widely known. We were keenly aware of the need for further awareness-raising activities in the future.
